The Simple Wisdom of Honey

As an acupuncturist, I’m often reminded that some of the most enduring health traditions are also the simplest.

I was thinking about this recently as I reached for a little honey to add to my tea. It struck me how instinctively we turn to honey when we have a sore throat, a cough, or simply need something soothing. There is a reason this humble food has been valued for centuries.

From a modern perspective, honey contains naturally occurring antioxidants and has been studied for its ability to soothe coughs and irritated throats. But Traditional Chinese Medicine has understood honey in a slightly different way for thousands of years.

In Chinese medicine, honey—or feng mi (蜂蜜)—is considered sweet and neutral in nature. It is traditionally used to nourish, harmonize, and moisten, particularly the Lung and digestive systems.

That concept of “moistening” is one I find particularly beautiful. In Chinese medicine, we pay close attention to dryness in the body—a dry throat, an irritating cough, or that feeling of being a little depleted after too much stress, too little sleep, or simply too much doing.

Sometimes the answer isn’t another complicated supplement or wellness routine. Sometimes it is something as simple as a warm cup of tea with a teaspoon of honey.

There is something comforting about a remedy that has been passed down through generations and still has a place in our modern lives.

A little sweetness. A little nourishment. And perhaps a gentle reminder that taking care of ourselves doesn’t always have to be complicated.
