What Summer Fruits Can Teach Us About Healing

The other day, a patient told me she was feeling exhausted, overheated, and just “off.” She’d been reaching for iced coffee to get through the day but wasn’t really eating because it was too hot.

I asked her one simple question: “Have you been eating any watermelon?”

She laughed, but there was actually a reason behind it.

One of the things I love most about Chinese medicine is that it encourages us to eat with the seasons. Summer is associated with the Heart and the Fire element—a time of warmth, activity, and abundance. But too much heat can leave us feeling drained, puffy, irritable, and dehydrated.

Nature has already provided the antidote.

Think about what’s overflowing at your local farm stand right now: watermelon, peaches, berries, cherries, melons. These fruits are naturally hydrating, cooling, and rich in antioxidants that help calm inflammation and replenish the fluids we lose during the hottest months.

Chinese medicine has recognized this for thousands of years. Long before we understood vitamins or antioxidants, practitioners observed that eating seasonal foods helped people feel healthier and more balanced.

It’s a beautiful reminder that wellness doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes healing is as simple as choosing the foods that nature is offering us right now.

So while you’re enjoying that juicy peach or bowl of berries this summer, know that you’re doing more than treating yourself. You’re supporting your body exactly the way the season intended.
